Given all of the options, more and more people are opting for the classic style and warmth of outdoor fireplaces to make their summer nights more enjoyable.

Perhaps it’s because they give off beauty and warmth, as well as light. The question is, what type of fireplace is right for your outdoor gathering area? Also, why a fireplace rather than a fire pit or even heaters? You have questions. We have answers. Consider the following ideas when selecting your outdoor fireplace!

What Is an Indoor/Outdoor Fireplace?

Of all the outdoor heating and lighting options, a see-through fireplace is the most luxurious. A double-sided fireplace that spans both the interior and the exterior, these modern gas units are unique in that they connect two separate gathering spaces (say, a living room and a patio or a dining room and an outdoor pool), providing a window-like view of the other side while offering a two-sided view of the flame.

Fire Pit or Fireplace? How to Choose Wisely

They both exude charm and comfort, but that doesn’t mean they’re both right for your patio or backyard. Whether you choose a fire pit or a fireplace depends on whether you want the following:

  • Beauty or Fellowship. If you’re looking for something grander and more eye-catching than an open flame fire pit, then an indoor/outdoor fireplace is a better choice. Fireplaces also invite people in and spur conversation while creating a stunning tableau akin to a work of art. Unlike fire pits, which are well suited to informal environments, see-through fireplaces fit well in upscale homes and business establishments, as well as casual backyards.
  • A Campfire Feel or an Architectural Statement. Unlike a fire pit, which bears an uncanny resemblance to a campfire, a fireplace is a permanent architectural element that fits into its surroundings. In other words, it looks as if it were an essential element of the house, rather than an afterthought.
  • Wind and Smoke Protection. Do you live in a windy area? How much smoke are you willing to tolerate? Fire pits are open, which means gusts can easily blow the flame and smoke around. That can make for some uncomfortable evenings unless you’re willing to go without the flame.
  • Direct vent gas fireplaces, on the other hand, are enclosed in glass, which protects the flame and prevents smoke from escaping. Meanwhile, the vents expel exhaust away from the gathering area, so no one has to breathe in fumes.
