All About the Burner
A fireplace can look magnificent with a well-designed surround, internal media and a style that perfectly complements a room. But without an attractive, quality burner inside, the experience and effect of a fireplace can be completely lost once it’s lit.
Commonly, gas fireplaces in the United States employ a ribbon burner. That burner features ports of the same size in a straight line. A ribbon burner’s flame appears lined up with no variation in the size of the flame.
Ortal has devoted a great deal of resources into our burner types in order to create taller flames, a more realistic variety of flame heights, variation in placement and the ability to customize the flame.
We employ a port burner more commonly found in Europe. It features a series of ports throughout a wider tray that help the flame appear more randomly placed. By using our “burner coins,” it’s possible to block or partially block certain ports to customize the look of an individual fireplace and create dimensional variation in the flame heights. Our port also makes it possible to create a taller, more visually compelling flame. By placing the internal media appropriately, it’s possible to hide the tray and further customize the flame.
However, not all port burners are the same. When Ortal engineers first began working with port burners, they knew they need to overcome a negative. Port burner flames, when turned up, tend to result is a quickly vacillating, “nervous” flame, which is the opposite experience that a fireplace should produce.
The engineers were able to create what we now call the Ortal burner. They were able to slow down and control the movement of the flame without decreasing its height or visibility. As a result, the burner produces a more realistic flame, one that moves slowly and “dances” beautifully. We believe it’s the best burner and flame available in the industry for linear fireplaces.
In addition to the Ortal burner, our engineers also created the Wilderness Collection burner which produces a realistic flame that we believe is unmatched in the industry. With a through-the-log technology and moving the gas through the interior of the log media to ports of varying sizes, flame appears to emanate from the log itself rather than beneath it. While the burner is a natural for more traditional units that mimic wood-burning fireplaces, it has also proven popular when specified in nearly every fireplace we offer. It has also helped create unique, attractive designs when combined with other internal fireplace options, such as stone or glass.
